LDS Tour A. Tulum & Cenote

Tulum (meaning wall in Mayan) is located 128 km from the city of Cancun. It is believed that the original name was Zama (meaning sunrise), since it is in view of a daily dramatic sunrise due to its geographic location. Tulum is divided into three areas: the Mayan ruins of Tulum, the hotel zone and the village of Tulum.
With Alma’s LDS Tours, all of our guides are gentle, warm and have a testifying spirit. They definitely have a similar speaking manner and demeanor. You are privileged to get a great touch of Mexico and the Nephite/Lamanite heritage from our guides. It is a pleasure to sense how very closely they are connected to the Mayan lands and committed to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Perhaps at Tulum you’ll be surprised to see a Mayan, Book-of-Mormon-like setting perched as a light house on the shore. Tulum was built as a fortress city overlooking the Caribbean. The important structures here include the Castillo, a former temple and the Temple of the Frescoes with a 13th century wall painting. This is the “Garden Tomb” of Book of Mormon lands for us. Here we find a depiction of a woman giving birth to an “upside-down” God. At the Temple of the Frescoes, we see a depiction of “laying on of hands” on one fresco – hands that are symbolically giving a blessing.
The highlight of the tour is a three-panel series on the three-tiered temple. The center panel shows an upright God (which we interpret as God the Father). The left-hand side depicts an upside-down God (which we suggest as imagery of the Son of God, coming down to earth). The third panel is blank (which we propose might represent the Holy Ghost because He has no body).
As the sun begins to shine in the morning at Tulum site, we take a quiet moment to read 3rd Nephi and clearly visualize the Father announcing his Son, Jesus, whom he has sent down to minister and teach his gospel. It is a beautifully spiritual highpoint of our tour.

LDS Tour 1. Tulum, Chichen Itza & Cenote Ik kil

Evidence of Christ in Tulum
And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit. And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts? Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have. And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet. Luke 24:36-40
Tulum is one of the most intriguing and mysterious of all Mayan cities. In fact, it is not a city at all but a temple complex devoted to the teaching and worship of the Descending God. Within the walls of Tulum, artifacts have been found dating back to the first century AD, a stele exists which dates to the fifth century AD, while much of the architecture dates to the 12th century AD. In addition, the surrounding areas clearly show occupation from as early as the 3rd Century BC (or what we call the Preclassic period of the Maya).

Tulum and the Descending God
Tulum is the home of the Descending God. The Descending God has been so named by the archaeological community because he is always shown with his feet in the air as if he is descending from the sky. Many people, including anthropologists, archaeologists and guides have erroneously stated that the Descending God is only found in Tulum. This has been done out of ignorance – or in some cases, a simple desire to skirt the entire issue of the Descending God and what he potentially represents.
If Christ, having been resurrected, descended from heaven to visit the maya, He would have come in great glory, and the event would have been so singular that its depiction would have been repeated over and over throughout the Mayan world. This is what we see with the Descending God. Rather than being a God only seen in Tulum, we have found that there is no other Mayan deity as prevalent throughout the width and breadth of the Mayan world as the Descending God. Over and over again he is shown in the attitude of descending from the heavens.
In Tulum, we find that the Temple of the Inscriptions was built to teach all people that the Descending God was and is the supreme God of all gods and that all things are subject to him. The murals inside the temple tell the story of three men who may have been responsible for the building of the temple complex. In these murals, the three are portrayed as seers, possibly living in a physical state between life and death. The outside of the Temple of the Descending God bears symbolism that represents the Descending God as the light and life of the world and that he is the living water and light of the sun. The murals inside the temple, which have great need of restoration, show scenes that depict both heaven and earth – and perhaps creation.

Chichen Itza a Wonder of the World
The City of Kukulkan, the God of the Feathered Serpent

If you come to Mexico, add an incredible touch of culture. Take some time to visit one of the most amazing archaeological sites in Mexico: Chichen Itza (at the mouth of the well of the Itza). It is considered one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. At the ruins of Chichen Itza, you can visit magnificent temples such as the Kukulcan Pyramid and the Ball Game. Chichen Itza is an ancient city built by the Mayan civilization. The ancient city of Chichen Itza, considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, was founded in the year 514 BC and was considered the capital of the Mayan civilization. You shouldn’t miss this tour when coming to Mexico!

LDS Tour 2. Tulum, Coba and Cenote Tamcach-ha

Tulum (meaning wall in Mayan) is located 62 km from the city of Playa del Carmen. It is believed that the original name was Zama (meaning sunrise), since it is in view of a daily dramatic sunrise due to its geographic location. Tulum is divided into three areas: the Mayan ruins of Tulum, the hotel zone and the village of Tulum.
The archaeological zone of Tulum is perhaps one of the most beautiful places on the Riviera Maya, combining the mystery of the ancient civilization which inhabited this area with the singular beauty of the Caribbean Sea which bathes its shores. The city of Tulum is the only known archaeological site located by the sea and belongs to the region known as Tankah-Tulum which comprises the zone of Tahkah, Tulum and Xel-Ha. It was constructed at the top of a cliff facing the blue sea and has and an underwater coral reef that is the world’s second-largest.

Meet at the Riviera Maya to start the ATV expedition through the jungle, all the way to a completely dark and exciting cave. This cave is at a 5 minute hike into the jungle from the trail. LDS Tour 10. Tulum ruins, Horseback Riding & Snorkeling in the reef

The Temple of the Descending God was built in alignment with the morning star, the planet Venus and the sun so as to mark April 6th as the birthday of the Descending God. On that day, Venus can be seen rising into the night sky directly over the door of the temple, and sunlight forms a brilliant star that can be seen only on that day. This is extremely significant because Mayan Gods were known by the day on which they were born.
It is interesting to note that the LDS prophet Joseph Smith, who lived in the state of New York, published a translated ancient record in 1830 which told of a personal visit by Jesus Christ to the Americas shortly after His resurrection. In addition, he identified April 6th as the birthday of Jesus Christ. He also identified the ancient name of the city of Zion as being Zama. Zama was the original name for the city of Tulum. In 1831 (when Joseph Smith identified Zama as the name of the city of Zion), it is also interesting to note that included in the translation of the Book of Mormon was an account of three men, two of them brothers by the same mother, who were disciples of Christ and attended to Jesus during his visit to the Americas. The translation indicates that they were seers and were granted the power, by Christ, to live until His Second Coming in a translated state.

An Exciting Combination to Explore Sea and Land...
Starting at the Mayan Riviera Ranch, the horseback ride through the beach and jungle takes about one hour. The ride ends back at the ranch and transportation will be ready to take you to Playa Norte beach. Snorkeling equipment will be provided on site. You will explore an amazing coral reef (one of the best in the entire Mayan Riviera) for 40 minutes. Afterwards you will be able to choose which activities to end with – or to simply spend the time at the beach club area.

Rain filled the basin formed by the crater and found its way to the subsoil, where it gave life to an endless adventure scenario and capriciously sculpted a world of caverns that beats at the same rhythm pulsing in your heart: the world of Xplor. Xplor is a unique underground world, with activities that invite you to explore and rediscover your feelings and your senses through nature.
