The Quetzal bird is a mysterious, majestic and solitary animal, inhabiting the heights of the humid and green jungle; It is one of the most beautiful birds in the world, it stands out for its beautiful plumage of green, violet, blue, red and iridescent colors. Usually, these species live in places of Guatemala, but we can also find it in southern Mexico and other Central American countries. Unfortunately, this bird is in danger of extinction.
The Quetzal bird is a symbol for the Aztec and Mayan culture since for them they represented the gods Quetzalcóatl and Kukulcán (both very similar) and are mostly known as “the feathered serpent.” They had the belief that this bird during its flight its long feathers waved similarly to the movement of a viper.
For the Maya, the god Kukulkan is considered the supreme maker of the universe. He is regarded as the deity of the resurrection and the lord of the four elements.
Alma’s LDS Tours takes you to the ancient Mayan city of Chichen Itza, where the ancient Mayans built a large building to this god Kukulkan. It was so essential for them to that the descent from the heavens of the god is represented in the main building of Chichén Itzá, through a play of lights and shadows during the equinoxes as well as the carvings that serve it.
The Kukulcán pyramid is a wonder worth seeing, check out our tours and let Alma’s LDS Tours be part of your adventure on your Mayan trip.
