Additional Info: Cenote In case you haven't heard of a cenote before, a cenote (pronounced seh-no-tay) is a natural sinkhole caused by the collapse of the surrounding limestone. When this phenomenon happens, it exposes groundwater, creating a natural pool. Cenotes are perfect for swimming and snorkeling, with clear fresh water and sometimes aquatic life such as turtles and small fish. Tulum Tulum (meaning wall in Mayan) located 128 km south of the city of Cancun, It´s believed that the original name was Zama (meaning sunrise) because a dramatic daily sunrise that you can enjoy thanks to its geographic location. Tulum was built as a port city overlooking the Caribbean, It´s majestic temples sit perched as a lighthouse on the shore. The important structures here include the Castillo, a former Temple and the Temple of the Frescoes with 13th-century wall paintings. As you learn about each structure's purpose, the symbolism and the organization they functioned by, you’ll be surprised to find a Book of Mormon-like setting. This is the “Garden Tomb” of Book of Mormon lands for us. At the Temple of the Frescoes, we see a depiction of “laying on of hands” on one fresco“ hands that are symbolically giving a blessing. You will also find a depiction of a woman giving birth to an “upside-down” God; their deepest devotion was to a God known as Itzamná, also known as the "Descending God" who many believe is a possible reference to the Savior Jesus Christ. The highlight of the tour is a three-panel series on the three-tiered temple. The right-hand panel shows an upright God (which we interpret as God the Father). The center panel depicts an upside-down God (which we suggest as imagery of the Son of God, coming down to earth). The third panel is blank (which we propose might represent the Holy Ghost hence the lack of a physical body). As the sun begins to shine in the morning at Tulum site, we take a quiet moment to read 3rd Nephi and clearly visualize the Father announcing his Son, Jesus, whom he has sent down to minister and teach his gospel. It is a beautifully spiritual high point of our tour. With Alma’s LDS Tours, all of our guides are gentle, warm and have a testifying spirit. They all have a similar speaking manner and demeanor and we guarantee each can deliver a fantastic experience for you and your family to always remember!
