Additional information: Site Description: Dzibanche is possibly the largest and most important Mayan settlement in the southern state of Quintana Roo, sitting gently between sloping hillsides. In this landscape, there are no rivers or cenotes, but a lot of natural depressions that hold water all year round. Dzibanche is an obvious example of majestic architecture and public organization. Inscriptions found there demonstrate a formal style showing episodes from the life of a society focused on the fullness of its power. Dzibanche is a complex of four architectural groups that probably worked simultaneously and may have had different functions. Its the most widely explored, and in it are examples of monumental architecture of the Early Classic period: the Temple VI or lintels, Xibalba Square, Temple I (of the owl), Temple II (of the cormorants) and Temple XIII (of the captives). In 1967, Konhunlich was re-discovered thanks to a local Mayan, who stumbled upon looters who had uncovered and were preparing to remove a six-foot stucco mask from one of the temples. The site possibly dates to the Preclassic period although It appears to have become a major city from 300 to 900AD. Named after the cohune palm tree (which is abundant), Kohunlich is a moated city with walls. It has sophisticated drainage and plumbing. It also has a high number of solid stone residential complexes suggesting great prosperity and a democratic distribution of wealth. Many of these residential complexes have unusually large interiors. There is some indication it was inhabited by master artists, potters, and scribes. There are two primary structures of particular interest: the Temple of the Masks and the Temple of the 27 Steps. The Temple of the Masks is an excellent example of building on top of preexisting buildings, a process that sometimes preserved and sometimes destroyed what was buried underneath. In this case, it protected the masks which date to the Early Classic period. These masks are some of the greatest treasures in the Mayan world and are representations of the Sun God, KinichAhau. They face west so that the setting sun can light their faces at the end of each day. Kohunlich is a city that provides beautiful forest walks and in certain seasons you can see toucans, spider monkeys, howler monkeys and beautiful flowers.
