About this tour

Labna is a Mesoamerican archaeological site and ceremonial center of the pre-Columbian Mayan civilization, located in the "Puuc Hills" region of the Yucatan Peninsula. It is situated to the south of the large Mayan site Uxmal in the southwest of the present-day state of Yucatan, Mexico. It was incorporated with Uxmal as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. Labna is one part of a massive archaeological route called "Puuc Route" The name Labna means "old house" and is characterized by its castle and triumphal arch, whose architectural style contrasts with that found in other Mayan cities. The site is dated to the Late Classic period and has evidence of settlements from the Early Classic period, giving a date range from 300 to 1000 AD. The buildings have columns that adorn the entrances, continuing with underground rooms. This style of the columns is evident mainly in the building’s primary entrance.

Among the buildings of the compound, there´s the existence of a half-buried pyramid which crest can be seen in excellent conditions. This pyramid is called the Labna Castle, a massive two-story Palace (El Palacio), which is one of the longest contiguous structures in the Puuc region at approximately 120 m (393.7 ft) in length.

From the palace, a ceremonial path (sacbe) extends to an elaborately decorated gateway arch (El Arco). The most striking architectural element, the Labna Arch, called by many as Arch of Triumph Maya. It is a solid horizontal bar with two curved ends, with a sober contrast to the center arch.
