Additional Info: Akumal Bay Akumal is a small beach-front tourist resort community 100 km (62 miles) south of Cancun, between the towns of Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Akumal means place of the turtles in Mayan. Akumal, with one of the most beautiful beaches on the Caribbean Sea, has particular appeal to those interested in exploring underwater and having a great snorkeling experience in the Riviera Maya. Akumal offers abundant marine life and easy snorkeling conditions and the best (and only) area on the Riviera Maya where you can swim with the sea turtles all year round. You will be able to see them here, close to the bay. Sea turtles can be found in Akumal laying eggs on the beaches at night throughout the nesting season (end of April to October) or swimming in the central bay during the day. The hatching season runs from June to November, coinciding with hurricane season; This translates to significant losses in the turtle population when major storms hit the area. However, green turtle populations seem to be steady. Availability This tour is available every Monday.
