Nauvoo is a small city in Hancock, Illionois near to the Mississippi River and Iowa. The main attraction in this city is the historic importance and its religious significance to member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
In order to scape from persecution in Missouri, Joseph Smith led the Latter-day Saints group to a small town in Illinois called Commerce. After a year, President Joseph Smith renamed the town as Nauvoo an Hebrew word which means “beautiful”. The saints drained the land and established homes and were told to build a temple, they built it and organized stakes of Zion. A few years later, after the death of Prophet Joseph Smith, Saints left the area and made their way west.
LDS Church owns most of the historic sites in Nauvoo, including the houses of Brigham Young and Heber C. Kimball, which are open to public in general. The Relief Society Memorial Garden featuring great statues was designed in honor to all the historical events that happened in the past and was dedicated in 1978.
The rebuilt Nauvoo Illinois temple is the 113th dedicated temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints. Church leaders and architects carefully worked to replicate the same structure and exterior design of the old 19th century Nauvoo temple. Every year Nauvoo is visited by more than one million of people from around the world.
