The beginning of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Brazil occurred in 1923, with the migration of the German family Zapf Ipoméia to the region, Santa Catarina. Later, the Zapf, along with the couple Lippelt also from Germany, wrote to the First Presidency requesting that they send missionaries and support materials to spread the word of God the more families of German origin. The first Mormon missionaries who answered the call of missionary work came from Buenos Aires, Argentina.
In 1930 inhabitants of the city of Ipoméia organized the first congregation of the Church in Brazil. The following year the church bought a small chapel in the city of Joinville, Santa Catarina also. In Joinville was founded the first Brazilian organization of Relief Society.
Between 1935-1938 the first mission was established in Brazil, with headquarters in Sao Paulo, whose first president was Rulon S. Howells. Total faithful baptized into the LDS Church in Brazil was 143 members. The work of the church soon aired between Portuguese-speaking inhabitants to Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná and São Paulo. In 1939 the Book of Mormon was translated into Portuguese.
The expanding of the Church began with much enthusiasm in Brazil, however, during the period of the Second World War, the work had to be suspended along with the broadcast. After the war the Church returned to send missionaries to the states of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, Goiás, Amazon and Pernambuco.
Missionary work has been ongoing since then, Brazil has 27 missions, 310 Family History Centers and six temples in operation and recently overcame Mexico, becoming the second country with more members, after the United States.
