Cancun

Cancun, Quintana Roo is a wonderful vocational paradise and a major world-renowned tourist destination that can accommodate up to 400,000 people from all parts of the world. But not only human beings find Cancun to be a tropical oasis perfect for any vacation stay but also, for centuries, over the years it has become a world headquarters, a refuge sheltering up to 4 different species of sea turtles who travel from the Caribbean Sea into the southeastern Mexican coast to lay their nest. October of every year is the official season of release for baby sea turtles nesting from May to September along 12 kilometers of beach. The official event takes place at the beachfront of any resort with more guarded turtle nests and has the presence of local authorities, media, tourists, and locals who wish to join.

Gabriela Resendiz Romero, CEO of Ecology in the municipality of Benito Juárez, said that to this date there are 156 turtle nests with a total of 18 000 201 eggs. 4 of the 8 recognized species of turtles in the world arrive in the Mexican Caribbean Coast: white, hawksbill, leatherback and loggerhead turtles At the Mexican Caribbean coasts arrive.

“The loggerhead turtle species are endangered, so since the 90s, their capturing has ceased in our country,” said the head of the agency. Just last May 14 the first loggerhead arrived to nest on the coast of Cancun, which laid 112 eggs which the first should be born in the middle of next month.

Every day three to four turtles arrive on the shores of the hotel zone of Cancun and Punta Brava, Puerto Morelos, where 32 protection pens are ready. A total of 3, 973 people, including children, adolescents, and adults, have received environmental education talks, about the protection of turtles and it is expected that for this holiday period more will add up to this wonderful cause. Security agents, entertainment staff and lifeguards are trained for this season protection and conservation of sea turtles. A total of 75 university students perform social service in this work.
