Chichen Itza is one of the most famous and popular sites to visit in the Peninsula of  Yucatan. In 1988, Chichen Itza was enlisted on the UNSECO as Humankind Heritage. Many years after, since 2007 it has been elected by the UNESCO (The United Nations, Educational, Science and Cultural Organization), after a Worldwide election, has chosen this beauty to become one of the 7 New Wonders of the Modern World.

This wonderful archaeological site located west from the beautiful colonial city in the state of Yucatan known as Valladolid and only 110 kilometers east from the state’s capital Merida.

Chichen Itza was one of the greatest and strongest capitols or empires to exist after Uxmal, Kabah or Sayil.

The city was established in the early 200 a.d. by a Mayan tribe known as the Itzaes. Something very characteristic of this site is surely the finding of a great Cenote (underground water deposit) where many vestiges artifacts were found made out of jade, silver, copper and many other precious stones.

The name, according to research, means “The Mouth of the Well of the Itzaes”.

In the interior of this wonderful site you will find amazing high rising structures and temples with very elaborate carvings decorated with original stucco and colorful murals. One things that really makes this site unique is the appearance of many serpents carved on most of the temples representing their devotion to the God Kukulcan. According to many archaeologists, Kukulcan is the mayan versión of the Toltec god Quetzalcoatl. Kukulcan which means the God of the Feathered serpent. According to mayan mithology the serpent represented dominance over earth and the feathers dominance over the heavens. They also believed that this god promised to descend from the heavens in to the earth.

For this reason, the mayan studied the universe very closely including the various positions of the sun and moon throughout the days to time his arrival. They created lunar and solar alignments to remember the fufilment of this profecy.

For ages many tribes around would gather and even today, many turists from many parts of the world gather to view a great event that occurs every April 6th to remember to the descencion of Kukulcan. This happpens on the North face of the Castle between 5pm and 5:30 when the sun is setting west. 8 triangles of light and shade plus the head of the serpent found at the bottom of the stairway are iluminated creating the body of Kukulcan.

In this beautiful city is also found the largest ball court field which was considered a sacred ritual for the ancient inhabitants of the mayan culture. This ritual was originally know as “Pok Ta Pok” reffering to the sound that the ball makes as it bounces from side to side in the interior of the field thanks to the acustic architecture.
