Coba

Coba is a wonderful archaeological site that belongs to the Mayan Culture located in the northwest area of the state of Quintana Roo in Mexico. With no doubt it is one of the most important Mayan settlements discovered since the arrival of the Spaniards into Mexico in the late 1400’s.

Due to fact that even today, their are no actual evidences of what the original name this city had, modern-day investigator Eric Thompson (1936) has given this site the name of Kinchil Coba using a reference of the apearence of the God of the Sun found on many of the temples carvings known as Kinchil and Coba meaning in the mayan language “Cob” (or Kob) turbid or chopped and “A”  (or ha) water(s) in reference to the lagoons surrounding the site of turbid water.

This wonderful Mayan settlement has an aprox. Territorial extensión of about 70 squared km. It’s distinguised by a large network of of 45 White highways or “Sacbeobs” connecting the main cermonial centres of the city and other site nearby. These Sacbeobs are unique because of their elevation and the use of lime, conch and seashells to pave these roads in order to reflect the sunlight and moonlight helping the natives to travel between the dense sub-tropical jungle found in the península of yucatan.

Also in Coba you will be able to climb the second largest Temple of the Mayan Culture which is 42 meters high know as Nohoch Mul which means “Great hill”.

Many modern-day archaeologists agree that Coba could have been a Ceremonial meeting point for seven different mayan tribes that were settled in the area because of the fact that there are 7 diferent temples with their own ball court (Pok ta Pok) and and an Observatory.
