The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints celebrated a half century of its establishment in the Yucatan Peninsula,  since the first 50 members were baptized in 1959.

Pioneer members gathered from different cities of the peninsula to attend to this soulful celebration held on June, 13 of 2010 at the Stake Center located in the Vergel colony.

Throughout the evening they were sharing the memories of the first experiences of the Church in Merida, planting the seed which has now given fruit with thirteen Stakes and Districts throughout the Peninsula, which grouped together 30 000 members.

On that night of memories, commemorating the half century of the Latter Day Saints in Merida, early members expressed their experiences recalling the first missionaries who came to this city in 1959. Some recalled how they joined the Church through baptism who after were presented with the opportunity to serve in missions around the country.

The ceremony was presided by the President of the Stake Lakin, Larry Traconis Balam, who expressed his gratitude to the pioneers who accepted the restored gospel in those difficult years.

Under the direction of Luis Felipe Peña, one of the first members since 1959, we conducted a multimedia presentation which remembered the first members and missionaries. They also gave time for some members to share their testimony and emotional experiences.

In the early beginnings, members of the church met in rented houses in the city of Merida. The first meetinghouse was built  on the street #70 between #65 and #67 and then built buildings in different parts of the city, and in cities such as Campeche, Valladolid, Tizimín, Ticul and Cancun. In 2000 the building was demolished on 70th Street to make way for the construction of the Temple “The House of the Lord” where they perform more sacred ordinances such as eternal marriage.
