The first Mormon missionaries in England
The growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is due to the missionary work of those who have worked to fulfill God’s assignment to preach his word to everyone possible. Since the publication of the Book of Mormon, our missionaries traveled to distant lands to spread the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ throughout the world. No other church has made missionary journeys, uninterrupted, so active and so successfully (12 million members). Even in adversity Mormon missionaries have continued their outreach. This time Alma’s LDS Tours invites you to know the history of the first Mormon missionaries in England.
After the founding of the Church, the Mormon pioneers were divided into groups, some traveled to Ohio and began building the first Mormon temple in Kirtland, others gathered in western Missouri.
Proposed addition to touring the U.S. territory, the pioneers, organized by the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, decided to move to England. The first trip was made by boat from Ohio on June 13, 1837, by Orson Hyde, Willard Richards, Joseph Fielding, and Heber C. Kimball. When Arrive in New York they were joined by three missionaries (John Goodson, Isaac Russell and John Snyder).
Back in England, the missionaries worked without a cent, however, the illuminated faith. During the first years of teaching in the UK, our church did over a thousand converts. Thereafter the seed has been planted in many hearts have finally decided to honor the truth of God. Currently the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has more than 180,000 members in this country.
