St. Louis Missouri Temple

The state of Missouri has a great importance for our church; therefore Alma’s LDS Tours has decided to dedicate this blog to edit one of the most tragic periods in the history of Mormonism.

In 1831, the Mormon pioneers began to gather after a revelation given to Joseph Smith. Very soon, the Mormons began to buy land and settle in the city of Independence, Jackson County. The situation caused concern to residents due to the difference of religious and political ideas. The people of Missouri were in favor of slavery, while Mormons rejected it. Moreover, most of them residents conflict caused the revelation to Joseph Smith about the true location of the Garden of Eden.

By July 1833, the people of Missouri carry out their threat to expel all Mormons and destroy everything on their path found. Subjected to unprecedented violence, Mormon leaders agreed to leave Jackson County, without compensation. Mormons found temporary refuge in Clay County, Missouri. In 1836 the state government created Caldwell County. However, the intolerance of people continued for what the pioneers had to defend themselves. Hostilities were climbing until the October 2sd, 1838, Governor Lilburn Boggs signed an extermination order to kill Mormons. Three days after the order was extended, in the town of l Haun’s Mill were murdered dozens of women and children. On October 31st, 1838, Joseph Smith and others were arrested. Once again, the Mormons were forced to leave their homes. Brigham Young and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles addressed the members of the Church to Illinois, where they found people kind and tolerant.

Today our church has the respect it deserves; The Temple of St. Louis Missouri is number 50th of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It was dedicated by Gordon B. Hinckley on June 1, 1997. In the dedicatory prayer, President Hinckley said, “we remember that this temple is in the state of Missouri, where the Prophet [Joseph Smith] and his companions suffered much, and at last were driven by a cruel and illegal extermination order. Losses were terrible, terrible suffering. These grateful that the extermination order has been revoked and that the persecution is over. Today Your Church enjoys the light of good will. “
