Star Valley Wyoming Temple

The story of the first members of our Church in Wyoming is very interesting; Alma’s LDS Tours invites you to found out. The brave pioneers who came from Mississippi built a ferry near the present city of Casper, known as Mormon ferry. In late 1847, more than 2,000 Mormons had crossed Wyoming.

The Church established an agricultural colony near Fort Bridger, the settlement provided supplies to other companies who traveled from the east. However, shortly after the colony was abandoned. The pioneers continued traveling through Wyoming, as part of their migration westward. Most groups traveled to Wyoming with no problem, but in 1857 the handcart companies Willie and Martin were trapped in the winter snowstorms. Nearly 200 people died tragically before he could be helped. Today, there are three monuments erected in memory of the handcart companies Willie and Martin and a memorial dedicated to the 21 Saints who died in one night.

During the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln asked Brigham Young to send pioneers to help along the emigrant road to protect telegraph and mail routes. Young fulfilled the request and sending 120 missionaries to live in several places in Wyoming until they were relieved by federal troops. Around 1850 several missionaries worked on the Wind River Reservation.

In 1877 Mormon pioneers traveled to looking for areas to settlement and to investigate the Salt River Valley, in the west area of Wyoming. They found a promising place and in 1878 the first settlers arrived in the Valley of Bear Lake in Idaho Territory. The first stake of Wyoming was organized on August 13, 1892. Since then, the population of the members of our church grew rapidly to become the second church now has more members in the state.

The Temple in Rexburgo Idaho and other temples of Idaho served roughly 63,000 church members until 2011, when it was announced the construction of Star Valley Temple.
