About the Phoenix Arizona Temple

The Phoenix Arizona Temple is a planned temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), to be constructed in the city of Phoenix, Arizona. The announcement of the temple on May 24, 2008 came a month after the Gila Valley and Gilbert Arizona temples were announced for Arizona.

The original design of the temple, which resembled the Draper Utah Temple in design, exceeded the maximum height restrictions imposed by existing zoning law and required an exception be granted by the Phoenix city council. The exterior color of the temple was also changed from the traditional white to a more natural stone color in an effort to address the concerns of residents in the neighborhood.

Ronald A. Rasband, of the Presidency of the Seventy, presided at a small groundbreaking ceremony held on June 4, 2011.The building is likely to be completed in late 2013.

When President Thomas S. Monson announced that a fifth temple for Arizona would be built in Phoenix, he stated: “The blessings of the temple are eternal. Those who come to this holy house will feel of God’s love for His children and come to a greater understanding of their own divine origin and potential as His sons and daughters.” The announcement came less than a month following the announcement that temples would be built in Gilbert, Arizona, and in Arizona’s Gila Valley. All three temples would serve members belonging to the district of the Mesa Arizona Temple, which was attended by more patrons than any other temple outside of Utah.
