The whale shark is the largest shark and the largest fish. How strange, you say? Not really. Because the whale shark is in fact not a whale. With a mouth that can be as large as four feet wide, the whale shark is a filter feeder and sieves enormous amounts of plankton, krill, small fish and squid to eat through its gills as it swims. It can process over 1500 gallons (6000 liters) of water each hour. Whale sharks are harmless to people and usually indifferent to divers. When it comes to speed, they belong in the slow lane, as their top speed is 3 m/hr (5 k/hr). This shark swims slowly near the surface, consuming crustacean plankton and small fish.
Each tour takes only ten people. There is a 30-45 minute boat ride to where the whale sharks are. If you just want to go on the ship (but not snorkel), it is the same price per person. Water, sodas, juice and a sandwich are available during the tour – and an open bar on the way back.
