Overview “The temple was a place of learning for the Savior when He was on the earth; it was very much a part of His life. Temple blessings are available once again in our day.” – James E. Faust If you are looking for a spiritual experience during your stay in Mexico, we invite to come with us to the Merida, Yucatan LDS Temple; the nearest LDS temple to Cancun and the Riviera Maya. As we travel, our expert tour guides will share with you inspiring insights and stories about the Mexican LDS pioneers who´s dedication and work eventually led to the construcción of this beautiful temple for the Yucatan Peninsula. On this tour, you will also see the beautiful historical city centre of Merida, famous for its old Spanish colonial architecture and fabulous cathedrals and ex-haciendas. We also enjoy a wonderful meal at a exhacienda and taste the world famous Yucatan Cuisine. More details below. The Merida, Mexico LDS Temple, located in the Mexican state of Yucatan on the north end of the Yucatan Peninsula in the Gulf of Mexico. This historically rich area is the heart of Mesoamerica, being in the midst of some of the world’s most renowned archaeological ruins including the famous Uxmal and Chichen Itza Mayan ruins. To the east is the state of Quintana Roo; to the west is the state of Campeche; to the north is the Gulf of Mexico, and far to the south is the state of Chiapas. Also, the city is located in the Chicxulub Crater. It has a very flat topography and is only 30 feet (9 m) above sea level. The land outside of Merida is covered with smaller scrub trees and former henequen (also known as agave) fields. Almost no surface water exists, but several cenotes (underground springs and rivers) are found across the state. Mérida has a historical centre typical of Spanish colonial cities. The street grid is based on odd-numbered streets running east/west and even-numbered streets running north/south, with Calles 60 and 61 bounding the Plaza Grande in the heart of the city. The more affluent neighborhoods are located to the north, and the most densely populated areas are to the south. The historic centre area is becoming increasingly popular with American and other expatriates who are rescuing and restoring the classic colonial structures. The Los Angeles Times recently noted this surge of interest in saving Merida’s historic downtown.
