Overview

If your cruise ship docks in Puerto Progreso, do not miss the opportunity to join us on a Book of Mormon tour with Alma’s LDS Tours and explore and learn about the amazing Mayan city of Dzibilchaltun and their possible link to the Mulekites. Dzibilchaltun is also the closest Mayan site, only a 20 minute drive away from Progreso Port.

If there is time, we may also visit the famous cenote at the ruins. This is a great option for those who wish to visit a Mayan archealogical site on their trip to Mexico, but also want to have time to enjoy Progreso Port and do some shopping.

Additional information about the site:

The word Dzibilchaltún is formed by four Mayan words: Dzib, writing; il, location; Chal, flat; And tun, stone; Which can be translated as "place where there is writing on flat stones" commonly known today as “Stelae”.

Dzibilchaltún is a settlement that has a long occupational sequence from the Late Preclassic to the Late Post classic (600 B.C. to 1100 A.D.), for this reason it became one of the largest settlements on the northern coast of the Yucatan peninsula. The distribution of the architectural spaces is of concentric type and reached to cover an area of 16 km ².

Its Temple of the Seven Dolls attracts hundreds of visitors at the spring and autumn equinox as the sun shines through the building and shines on its doorstep. Also admire the many beautifully carved stelae and its open cenote of clean waters.

When permitted, we may swim in a natural sink hole with fresh water, which locals call “Cenote”. So come prepared with a swim suit and a towel just in case.
