The history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Hawaii, begins in the year 1850, after the publication of an edict granting rights of worship in the islands. The first missionaries numbered nine members who organize the voyage after they moved from the city of San Francisco on board Imaum of Muscat. Their gospel work began immediately on the islands Kauai, Lahaina, Maui, The Big Island-name that was known as the Island of Hawaii and Honolulu.
In 1865, our church, under the direction of Brigham Young, purchased land in Laie to gather the faithful, after the construction of the first temple in the islands. It is said that such construction could only have been completed as a miracle. Apparently, the wood used for construction was running out, but suddenly appeared a ship aground in the bay, the accident forced the crew to unload its cargo of timber. Thus, the pioneers brought the wood to complete construction.
After this temple was complete, they founded Church College, now Brigham Young University Hawaii. This institution includes the Polynesian Cultural Center, the state’s largest museum, and an entertainment site, which has one million visitors a year.
The Mormon population in Hawaii continues to grow, there are currently two temples built (Laie and Kona), 66,066 members organized in 15 stakes and 12 branches and a mission. There are 25 Family History Centers used in research and genealogical study.
